Initial Efficiency Information

On March 3, 2004 we took our first airspeed measurements and made some initial efficiency calculations. It was approximately 70 degrees F.

The Shaft Horsepower and Kilowatts were calculated from amps and volts taken from the drive display. Motor % Power is the percentage of full power, 3000 horsepower. Jet Horsepower is the kinetic energy in the jet assuming a flat airspeed profile, 12.5 foot diameter, and standard atmospheric conditions. Efficiency is the difference between the shaft horsepower and jet horsepower. This L-1 is at it's highest efficiency at it's design speed of 120 MPH. The design can be adjusted optimal efficiency at other airspeeds. 86% is a very good efficiency for any wind tunnel, especially for an open circuit design.
